Working in High Risk Confined Spaces
Overview
This unit reflects the national occupational standard for working in high-risk confined space environments across both water and non-water industries. It covers sectors such as potable water and sewage operations, as well as industries including construction, utilities, engineering, and manufacturing.
The unit assesses learners in realistic high-risk conditions, requiring them to prepare for and work safely, enter and exit confined spaces, use breathing apparatus and equipment correctly, follow procedures, and respond to emergencies. Emphasis is placed on safe, efficient behaviour and the demonstration of both practical skills and relevant technical knowledge through observation and written assessment.
Course Content
- Prepare to work safely in high risk confined spaces.
- Enter and exit high risk confined spaces safely.
- Use equipment and tools safely and in accordance with manufacturers’ specifications.
- Follow procedures and work safely.
- Deal with emergencies.
- Understand the principles of working in high risk confined spaces.
- Understand standard protocols for working in high risk confined spaces.
Teaching
This is a highly interactive course taught through theory and practical training.
Entry Reqirements
Candidates must be medically fit to undertake the training and will be asked to self-certify during the induction.
Candidates must not exceed 140kg (22 stones) in weight as this is the current maximum user weight for the fall protection equipment that will be used during the training.

Qualifications You Gain
Upon completion, delegates will receive a certificate that will last for 3 years. This course will need to be completed again if delegates wish to renew this qualification.
